Open Dental stays your chart and your system of record. This connects through Open Dental's published API and adds voice charting on top of it — it is not a replacement chart, not a data migration, and not a conversion.
The hygienist reads the numbers aloud during the exam. Capture runs on the same speech rail as clinical dictation, so the probing depths land in the exam without anyone typing them. The exam builds as it is spoken.
The provider sees the finished exam and approves it before anything is written. Approval is the step that files the exam — voice capture on its own does not.
On approval, the exam is written into Open Dental through the API as a new perio exam with its probe values, attributed to the provider by ProvNum. A perio chart PDF can be generated from the same exam.
No Intake.Dental software installs on your server. The connection runs through Open Dental's published API, which Open Dental serves through its eConnector on your own machine, so the eConnector needs to be installed and running on your side. There is no direct database access, no data migration, and no conversion. Setup is API credentials plus naming which providers and operatories are in scope. The same connection also covers clinical notes, eligibility, intake forms including insurance card images, treatment plans, payment posting, AR, patient search and self-scheduling.
No. Open Dental stays your system of record and your chart — the perio exam, the clinical note, and the eligibility detail are written into it.
No. It writes new exams; it does not read existing perio charts back out of Open Dental. Your prior perio history stays in Open Dental and is viewed there. If what you want is a tool that pulls historical exams into a separate timeline, this is not that.
This integration does not require you to turn off Open Dental's built-in perio voice feature. It connects through the published API rather than standing in front of the chart, so a room that prefers the built-in microphone can keep using it.
Open Dental's eConnector, which is what serves the Open Dental API, runs on your server — you can confirm it under Setup → Service Manager. Beyond that, the integration needs API credentials and a list of which providers and operatories are in scope. There is no direct database access.
Dictation audio is held in memory only and is not written to disk, S3, or a database. For dictation specifically, the transcript text is kept for 24 hours so an interrupted dictation can be resumed, and then it is discarded; that 24-hour window is a dictation behaviour, not a rule about perio capture. Separate recording features that do retain audio exist, but they are opt-in and consent-gated. PHI is encrypted at the field level at rest, and a BAA is signed.
The perio exam is written with ProvNum, Open Dental's own provider field, so the exam carries the provider. Clinical notes behave differently on Open Dental: a commlog carries no provider field, so the provider's name is written into the body of the note instead. On Dentrix Ascend, notes file against a real provider field.
If you run Open Dental and want the hygienist's hands free during probing, the exam is spoken, reviewed by the provider, and written back to Open Dental as a new perio exam with ProvNum on it. Open Dental stays your chart, the connection runs through its published API, and the same connection covers dictated notes and eligibility when you want them.

The hygienist calls the numbers out loud and the probing depths are captured hands-free. The provider reviews the exam, and it is written into Open Dental as a new perio exam through the API, attributed to the provider by ProvNum. A perio chart PDF can be produced from the same exam if you need one for the record or a referral.
